We just love water and we’re glad we have the Swan River as our playground! Here are 8 interesting facts about water you might not have known.

Did you know….?

1.	…that most of the universe’s water is produced as a by-product of star formation. When stars are born, their birth is accompanied by a strong outward wind of gas and dust. When this outflow of material eventually impacts the surrounding gas, the shock waves that are created compress and heat the gas. The water observed is quickly produced in this warm dense gas.
2.	…that 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water.
3.	…that sea water contains about 3.5% salt on average; the Baltic Sea only has 0.7% , the Red Sea on the contrary 4.0%.
4.	… that the earliest life forms appeared in water.
5.	… that the human body contains anywhere from 55% to 78% water depending on body size.
6.	… that the Ancient Greek philosopher Empedocles held that water is one of the four classical elements along with fire, earth and air.
7.	… that by the time a person feels thirsty, his or her body has lost over 1 percent of its total water amount.
8.	… that the total amount of water on the earth is about 326 million cubic miles.

… that the word catamaran stems from the Tamil word ‘kattu’ meaning ‘to tie’ and maram meaning ’wood’ or ‘tree’. So basically a catamaran is two trees tied together. Catamarans were already invented in the 15th century AD by people at the Tamil coast in India. They used these boats for conquering regions in Burma, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Although the name catamaran comes from India, the boat itself evolved from the boats used by the Polynesians to travel from one island to the other. The first Englishman to mention the name catamaran was William Dampier, 1697, who came across catamarans on his trips to India on the search for new business ideas.

A lot later, 1877, Nathanael Herreshoff, an American, started building these Polynesian-style catamarans and immediately won a competition with this new kind of boat. After the losers of the competition protested the catamaran was banned from all further regattas until the 1970s.

Today catamarans compete in various international regattas and the Olympic Games.

Congratulations to current and past staff on their placings in the Hobie 16 Worlds in China, with Gavin taking 2nd place and Alex and Phyl placing mid field.

In all, 4 of the first 10 placings were members of the Nedlands Yacht Club, proving once again that we have some of the most competitive 16′ Catamaran sailors in the world right here in Perth.

Many of these sailors were first introduced to sailing by Funcats while still at school.

Sailing one of our cats is a simple as it gets.

We truly can have you out on the water in as little as 20 minutes! If you are doubting we can tell you it really is as simple as three easy steps:

1. Sit on one side of the boat, hold onto the rope that is attached to the sail (fairly loosely) & control the steering with the rudder.

2.To turn, simply pull the rudder behind your body

3.Once you have turned halfway, duck under the sail and sit on the other side.

And there you have it! You have just sailed a catamaran. We’ll go through this with you on the day of your hire along with the basics of wind direction and strength, tying knots, safety and terminology. You’ll feel like a pro in no time!

We also found this nice little video on youtube. Check it out
